'Brotox' “ Anti-Wrinkle Injections for Men
Last year, we saw a huge rise in male clients coming to our clinic. It seems that stigma of male skincare and grooming is fading away and men are now fully embracing their skin. In honour of this, this week is men's skincare week on the blog. Today's focus is our most popular treatments among our male clients.
Anti-wrinkle injections have increased in popularity over the last decade. While it had previously been female dominated, the cosmetic industry is seeing a large increase in male aesthetic treatments, the most popular of which being Botox. Dubbed Brotox, male anti-wrinkle injections offer a quick, easy way to knock years off a tired, ageing skin.After asking my male clients what they want to achieve, the answer is always the same A younger appearance. The male skin generally ages slower than that of a female. This is due to several factors including the thickness of the skin, which is around 20% thicker. A woman tends to show a rapid increase of ageing after menopause, which would suggest hormones are once again a major culprit.Today, it is much more acceptable, and rightly so, for men to take care of their appearance and have pride in how they look. Aesthetic appearance plays a large role in confidence and emotional state. If this can be achieved through cosmetic intervention then I believe it can only be a good thing for the male population to jump on board.The low down
As I've found my male clients prefer things delivered to them straight up, here's a run down of what you need to know when considering Botox.What is it?
Botox is a prescribed medication that works by blocking the signals in the brain from reaching the muscles that cause movement, so for a period of time, the muscle does not move. Since the protein in Botox solution is only attracted to muscles, it has no effect on the central nervous system or on the body outside of the treatment area.How much does it cost?
This varies from £189-£269 depending on the amount of areas being treated.Where can I have it?
Botox can be done in several points in the face depending on the look required and the specific area you want to target. The most common areas are forehead and around the eyes.Does it hurt?
Following your initial consultation the procedure is very quick. You will have discussed the chosen areas upon your first consultation and the Botox prescription will be ordered in for you. The needles used to inject are very thin to avoid discomfort. Occasionally you can develop a small bruise around the injection site and slight swelling. This will go down within a few hours.How often do I need it?
Most people tend to get between 3-6 months from Botox injections. However, it does vary quite largely from person to person.DOs and DON'Ts
- DO keep moving your facial muscles; this helps the Botox work its way into the muscle. Pull funny faces, frown and look surprised.
- DON'T lie down for at least 4 hours after your treatment. This means no late night appointments unless you're willing to stay up! Lying down immediately after treatment increases the risk of incorrect placement of the Botox.
- DO drink lots of water. Occasionally after injections some clients can feel hot and faint. Keeping hydrated will bring your body back into a state of calm.
- DON'T do any excessive or strenuous exercise. This again could manipulate the Botox to move around the face.
- DO take paracetamol if needs be. Some people can experience a very mild headache in the days after Botox. This is completely normal and will subside 1-2 days after treatment.
- DON'T take any other drugs including alcohol and aspirin, as they will thin the blood pre and post treatment and can increase the risk of bruising.
