Beat the Sensitivity with Gentle Cleansers

Beat the Sensitivity with Gentle Cleansers

In recent years, we have had more and more clients and customers coming to us with sensitive skin concerns. Sensitivity can be an absolute pain; it can prevent you from using your favourite products, wearing your holy grail foundation, or just leave your skin feeling really uncomfortable.

However, unlike some other skin concerns, sensitivity is often something that we trigger ourselves. The growing trend for stripping, scrubbing and shedding the skin in a bid for a radiant, smooth complexion could actually be causing more harm than good. One of the biggest culprits in this battle against sensitivity may surprise you the humble facial cleanser.

You know that super squeaky clean feeling you get after a good old cleanse? The one that leaves your face so clean that it feels like there's not a single trace of oil left on the surface? It may make you feel as though your skin is as clean as can be, but that is not the way your skin should feel after cleansing. That feeling of 'clean' is actually the feeling that your skin's natural barrier, which is in part made up of oils, has been compromised. This barrier helps to protect skin against external aggressors, so without it, our cells are left vulnerable to damage.

The main problem with cleansers that causes them to disrupt the balance in our skin is mainly due to one ingredient “ emulsifiers. Emulsifiers separate oils and water, and are often used in washing up liquids to give plates that polished finish. Plus, a lot of cleansers are also loaded with exfoliating ingredients, such as Glycolic Acid, which further strip the skin. If you're feeling a little sensitive, it's time to switch to something gentler to allow the skin to repair and rebuild itself. Our top picks are:

Dermaviduals DMS Cleansing Milk

Okay, okay, I know I talk about this cleanser quite a bit, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. One of the few emulsifier free cleansers on the market, this ultra gentle cleanser removes all make up (even eye make up), along with dirt and impurities, without taking away those vital oils. It's also really hydrating, so your skin feels smooth and soft after use.

Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser

Said to be a favourite of model and fashionista Alexa Chung, this gentle cleanser will not strip the skin of natural protective oils or emollients and maintains a healthy pH balance. The fragrance free, non-comedogenic formula makes it great for all skin types, and can be used be kids, teens and adults.
