Five Tips For Using Acid Exfoliators Correctly
The phenomenon of using acids in skincare is one that doesn't seem to be slowing down. First introduced in the 80s, the formulas have come a long way from the unstable originals, and their continual development and growth in the industry has meant they are now found in a wide range of products.
It seems that the world has gone a bit acid crazy; people often have a very acid heavy routine, with blends of AHAs and BHAs in every product they use. Although there are benefits to these types of ingredients, we're often not aware of the correct and safe way of using them, which leads to unnecessary irritation, dryness and sensitivity. We find that the best way to keep skin in tip-top condition is a mix of a non-emulsifying cleanser, a powerful antioxidant, a dose of vitamin A and, of course, a sunscreen. However, if acid products are your bag, here's how you should be using them for the best results.1.) Don't use them daily
For most things in life, the more you do something, the more you see results. Daily workouts with help you achieve the body you want. Daily revision helps you get the exam results you want. Surely the same applies to skincare, right? Wrong. Daily exfoliation, be it chemical or physical, is too harsh on the skin. Instead of creating that smooth, radiant complexion you're after, you'll find skin will become sensitive and irritated instead. Instead, use these acids as a treatment a couple of times a week.2.) Do a patch test first
Although all products advise this, how many of us actually do it? Well, when it comes to something as strong as acids, always do a patch test on your skin first and allow 48 hours to see if any reaction occurs. It's always better to be safe than sorry.3.) Always use a sunscreen
AHAs and BHAs renew the skin and can therefore increase sun sensitivity by up to 45%. It's always best to use these products on an evening and include a broad spectrum SPF in your morning regime. There's no point letting UV damage (which occurs everyday during daylight hours) ruin the hard work of your products.4.) Think about the rest of your regime
When using acids, it's important to keep the rest of your regime gentle, replenishing and rebuilding. Other stripping ingredients should be avoided on the days you're not using them. Clarisonic-type devices should also be avoided as these can damage the natural skin barrier and when used in conjunction with stripping products will cause more harm than good.5.) Use formulations for your skin types
It's worth spending the time swotting up on the different types of acid “ Glycolic, Salicylic, Lactic, etc. “ to find the one that best suits your skin type and skin concerns. If the product comes in percentage strengths, don't just go for the strongest one thinking you'll get faster results; opt for the lower percentage and gradually work through to allow your skin to acclimatize and limit irritation.
