Common Pigmentation Myths Debunked

Common Pigmentation Myths Debunked

When it comes to skin concerns, pigmentation is one of the most difficult to treat. With so many myths flying around the internet and lots of people desperate to clear their skin, they will often listen to unproven methods that don't have any improvement. Here are some of the myths we hear when speaking to clients.

Scrubs can help to remove dark spots

Pigmentation is caused by an over production of melanin at a cellular level. Scrubbing away skin at a surface level will do nothing at all to combat this. What's more, physical scrubs cause inflammation that can trigger the skin to produce pigment. You may find using scrubs will make your pigmentation worse rather than better.

Once the pigmentation is gone, it's gone

Unfortunately there's no cure for pigmentation. We can use products that clear the skin at a surface level, but you will always have to have a maintenance regime to maintain your clear complexion. Your skin specialist will be able to advise on the best maintenance product for your skin type, but a broad spectrum sun protection needs to be worn everyday, all year round.

The higher the SPF, the better the protection

It's a huge misconception that applying an SPF 50+ once a day will deliver a higher benefit than an SPF 15 regularly. The level of protection between these is actually very small, so even high SPF levels need to be reapplied regularly.Another confusion is that SPF measures the sun's protection against UVB rays but not UVA. To make matters worse, there is no official measuring system for UVA protection. Some manufacturers use a star system, while others use the PA system. Either way, you must ensure your sunscreen is broad spectrum to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Pigmentation may be tricky to treat but it's not impossible.
