Is Sweat Bad For Your Skin?

Is Sweat Bad For Your Skin?

We all know how great exercise is for both general health and skin health. Whether you prefer a brisk walk, intense gym sessions or the calming vibes of a yoga class, the increased circulation when exercising helps to improve lymph drainage, which is incredibly beneficial for skin health.

During exercise as your heart rate and circulation increases, a big boost of oxygen is delivered to skin. This rush of oxygen not only transfers much-needed nutrients to the skin, it also boosts radiance, giving you that gorgeous post-workout glow.

Ok, let's be honest, there aren't many people lucky enough to enjoy the coveted “post-workout glow. Most of us - including myself - are sweaty, hot and VERY red. But when it comes to working out, if you are putting in the effort, it's not going to be pretty!

Despite all the skin benefits associated with exercise, have you ever thought about how it could be negatively affecting your skin? We are all for a healthy lifestyle, which of course should include regular exercise, but let's look at what a sweaty workout might be doing to your skin.

Sweat: skin's enemy or ally?

It is thought that the increased blood flow during exercise helps to remove toxins from skin, and by detoxifying skin it also removes some of the underlying problems that can lead to breakouts.

Sweat is an entirely natural process and isn't actually that bad for skin. In fact, it has some positives.

Benefits of sweat:

  • Cools skin's surface
  • Flushes out grime & impurities
  • Prevents the transfer of some harmful bacteria to skin (e.g. E.coli and Staphylococcus)

It can be frustrating when you're eating healthy and hitting the gym regularly - your body is your temple - but you're still falling victim to frequent pesky breakouts. It makes you question if all your hard work is worth it. Could sweat be the culprit?

So if sweat is a natural process, why does it get such a bad rep? The problems actually start to arise when sweat is left to sit on the skin. Prolonging the time between finishing a sweaty workout and cleansing your skin can lead to clogged up pores, subsequent breakouts and even rashes.

Post-workout cleanse

Whether you prefer to workout in the morning or the evening, cleansing straight after your workout might not be the number one priority on your agenda. If that's the case, we've got the one product you need to ensure your skin is in top condition post-workout.

Clinisept+ Aftercare is a sterile solution often used in a clinical setting to prepare the skin for and keep skin clean after aesthetic procedures.

When applied to skin post-workout, any grime, dirt or bacteria on the skin is neutralised. The aqueous solution gently disinfects skin using the latest anti-microbial technology to deliver exceptional protection against infection and provide the ideal conditions for skin recovery and regeneration without any stinging or irritation.

Clinisept+ Aftercare is also extremely useful in treating and managing skin conditions such as acne thanks to the anti-microbial action. It can also be applied to cuts, grazes, insect bits and more.

We recommend applying Clinisept to your entire face as soon as you hit the changing rooms - keeping your eyes and mouth closed - and spritzing your face from top to bottom in the anti-microbial solution. Ensure you've covered your face to combat any nasty bacteria that could lead to clogged pores or breakouts.
